Investing against the tide

Given the current turmoil in the financial markets and the economic challenges within our nation, many people are hesitating to buy into the stock market. However, this is truly an excellent time to buy, particularly if you are a long-term investor! This may, in fact, be the biggest opportunity of your lifetime.

The markets have experienced downturns like this in the past. But many of us, perhaps, were not investing at that point in time, so it was not as personal to us then as it is this time around. In November 1974, few people thought it was a good time to invest. The Dow had lost more than 40 percent from its high in January 1973, and yet investors did start buying again and the markets began their steady climb.

In 1942, there was much to be concerned about in regards to World War II. But in April 1942, the market turned around and started climbing again. The biggest challenge always is deciding when to get back into the market, wondering if it’s hit bottom yet.
