In 1815, when Thomas Sweeney built a tavern and public house in Gettysburg on the major route that led west, he had his eye on the profits. Sojourners needed a place to rest, eat and get refreshed along their way. He knew his location, on a ridge right along the main road, would bring in business.
Sweeney’s business acumen must have fallen short, however, as he went bankrupt and sold the place to Frederick Herr in 1828...
