
Gettysburg artist Alan Paulson typically isn’t one to mix politics with his artwork. Though when he did, the results raised eyebrows across the country.
The 70-year-old Gettysburg artist and recently retired art professor glanced down at a folder of newspaper clippings. The pages are beginning to yellow, but the story remains fresh.
For more than 20 years, dating from 1966 to the mid-80s, a 17-mile stretch of Route 15, commonly called the Gettysburg Bypass, abruptly narrowed from four lanes to two. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, according to reports at the time, ran out of money before all four lanes of the project could be completed.
That led to approximately 180 accidents and 11 deaths.
